Biography

German dramatic soprano. Born in 1968 in Zella-Mehlis, GDR. She first studied at the Carl Maria von Weber Dresden University of Music, then in Italy. She made her debut in 1991 at the Teatro Regio in Turin as Gretel (Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel"). Laureate of several competitions, including the Viotti International Music Competition (Vercelli, Italy) and the International Wagner Singing Competition in Saarbrücken.

She regularly performs at many prestigious venues worldwide – the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera, Dresden State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Paris Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Frankfurt Opera, Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Teatro San Carlo (Naples), and others. In 2002, she made her Bayreuth Festival debut as Freia ("Das Rheingold"); in 2013 and 2015, she performed the role of Sieglinde ("Die Walküre") there. In 2016, she made her Salzburg Festival debut as Brünnhilde ("Die Walküre").

Anja Kampe's repertoire consists primarily of Wagnerian roles – Senta ("The Flying Dutchman"), Eva ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Sieglinde and Brünnhilde ("Die Walküre"), Kundry ("Parsifal"), Elisabeth ("Tannhäuser"), Isolde ("Tristan und Isolde"). She also performs roles such as Leonore ("Fidelio"), Agathe ("Der Freischütz"), Katerina ("Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"), Ariadne ("Ariadne auf Naxos"), the Marschallin ("Der Rosenkavalier"), Minnie ("La Fanciulla del West"), Tosca ("Tosca"), and others.

In 2018, the singer was awarded the honorary title of Kammersängerin.
